Gemini Chat looks like an ordinary AI chat, but it connects directly to your Google services. You can ask it to find information in Gmail, summarize a document in Drive or pull other relevant content from Google Workspace, all without leaving the chat.
Gemini Chat is free with a personal Google account, and it is also available with paid Google AI subscriptions. Which features you get and where the usage limits sit depend on your plan. The free version has limited integration with the Google apps, among other things.
Who it suits
For people who live in Google's ecosystem and want AI where they already are. Gemini Live (the voice feature) is particularly useful hands-free on mobile, but it works well in the Chrome browser too. Voice is not unique to Gemini, mind you.
Deep Research
If you have ever spent hours combing through the web, opening tab after tab, trying to stitch together a coherent overview of a complex topic, Deep Research is worth trying.
Deep Research is not an ordinary chatbot feature. It is a serious research assistant: it breaks your question into a detailed plan, searches the web systematically, often analyzes more than 100 sources over 5 to 15 minutes, and delivers a structured report with citations.
While it runs, you see in real time which sources are being analyzed and what Gemini is finding, which makes the process transparent. The model is trained to reduce hallucinations and get report quality up on complex tasks.
Deep Research is available for free, but limited to 5 reports per month. Paid plans give you more.
What others do better
Claude and ChatGPT are both stronger on coding and agentic work. If you are an individual paying for one service, we would suggest looking at ChatGPT or Claude. Both have a bigger ecosystem and give you more flexibility.

Tips for good use
- Pick the right model (Flash, Thinking or Pro) before you start. The model affects speed, depth and how far Gemini reasons.
- Deep Research is Gemini's strongest research feature. It searches 100+ sources and produces structured reports with citations.
- Use the Google integrations actively. Ask Gemini to summarize emails from Gmail or files in Drive.
- Gemini Live (voice conversation) works well for quick questions and hands-free use, but not for analysis or long conversations. Memory between sessions is limited.
- Start a new chat when you switch topic, task or source material. It cuts the risk of irrelevant old context hanging around.
- Use Gems to build your own AI assistants for tasks you handle often, with fixed instructions and ways of working.
