Ideogram
Ideogram

Ideogram is an AI image generator known for handling text inside images better than most competitors, which has long been a weak spot in the field. It generates images from text descriptions and supports different styles, including photorealistic, illustration and typography. If you make visual content where the text is actually an important element, that's one of Ideogram's biggest strengths.
What you get
Ideogram is more than a generator. It's also a practical editor inside the browser. Canvas is where you gather and build on images, and on paid plans you get features like Magic Fill, Extend and background removal. Style Reference lets you steer the look with your own reference images, and on the Pro and Team plans you can batch-generate images from a spreadsheet when you need a lot of variants.
Ideogram compared to Midjourney
Midjourney is often stronger on artistic expression and visual wow factor, while Ideogram is more practical when the image has to contain text, a clear layout or a design idea that gets reused later. Ideogram has a free plan, whereas Midjourney only has paid subscriptions. Both offer an API, and the pricing difference isn't clean enough for Ideogram to be generally described as 30-40 percent cheaper.
Limitations / things worth knowing
Images you create on the free plan are public by default. You need a Plus or Pro subscription to make the images you generate private.
Ideogram lets you generate and reuse the same character or face across images through Character Reference. Free users get a limited trial of this feature, while paid plans give full access.
Be aware that subscriptions renew automatically, and that Ideogram asks you to cancel at least five days before the next renewal if you want to avoid another charge.
How to use it
Go to ideogram.ai and create a free account. Write a prompt with the text you want inside the image wrapped in quotation marks. Ideogram generates 4 variants by default. The number of suggestions can be adjusted inside the tool.
On paid plans you can also use Canvas, Remix and Magic Fill to fine-tune the result further.
Features
Text in images (90-95% accuracy)
Ideogram is built to handle text as part of the image itself. That makes it especially useful for posters, packaging drafts, ad visuals and other concepts where the words actually need to be readable.
Canvas editor
Canvas works as a workspace for combining, organising and editing images. Use *Magic Fill* to change selected areas, *Extend* to widen the frame, and *Remix* to create new variants of an existing image. (Some of these features require Plus or Pro.)
Style References
Upload up to three reference images to steer colour, mood and visual style. Useful when you want several images to share a consistent look, for example across a campaign or a series of posts. (Requires Plus or Pro.)
Batch generation
Pro and Team plans only: upload a CSV file and generate many images in a single job. Built for larger production runs, for example when you need many variants of the same campaign, product or message.
API
Ideogram also offers its own API so developers can build image generation into other services or workflows. The API has its own setup and pricing, separate from regular user subscriptions.
Tips for good use
- Put the text you want in the image inside quotation marks in the prompt for the best results. Ideogram understands typographic context.
- Use Canvas with Magic Fill to change specific parts of an image without regenerating the whole thing.
- If you're making many images at once, batch generation is useful. You upload a CSV file with many variants and Ideogram produces the whole series in a single run. (Plus and Pro only.)
- Use Style Reference when you want a consistent look across several images. Upload one to three reference images and adjust the prompt gradually instead of changing everything at once.
- For artistic quality, Midjourney is still the better choice. Use Ideogram whenever text inside the image actually matters.
