ChatGPT Images runs on GPT Image 1.5, and the big difference from older image tools is that you can have a conversation with it. You describe what you want, get an image, say 'make the background blue and add a logo in the top left', and it updates the image without losing what you already have.
What works
Text in images is much better than it used to be. Logos, signs and diagrams with readable text are now possible. Not perfect on long blocks of text, but dramatically better than a year ago. Style consistency is good — you can keep a character recognisable across several images.
Compared with the competition
Midjourney produces more beautiful art. Ideogram is better at text in images (around 90–95% vs ChatGPT's roughly 80%). Gemini with Imagen 4 is faster. ChatGPT Images wins on the conversational side: you can iterate, edit and keep building in dialogue. For commercial work like logos, ads and mockups, it's the most versatile choice.
Limitations
Generation takes 30–60 seconds, slower than Gemini and Flux. Faces of real people often come out distorted or not identical when you ask for an edit. Guardrails can reject requests that feel legitimate. The free plan gives you a few images a day; Plus gives you around 50 per 3-hour window.
How to use it
Write an image description in ChatGPT Chat, for example 'Create an image of a cat sitting on a desk in watercolour style'. To edit an existing image, upload it and describe the changes you want. Be specific about style, colours, aspect ratio and mood for the best results.

Tips for good use
- Be specific with style, colours (feel free to use hex values if they need to be exact) and aspect ratio directly in the prompt for more control over the result.
- Upload a reference image and describe what you want changed instead of starting from scratch. The model keeps the style consistent.
- For photorealistic images, describe camera settings like 'paparazzi style, flash, motion blur' for more convincing results.
- Iterate in the conversation. Describe what should change between each round instead of regenerating the whole image from a new prompt.
- Ask explicitly for a transparent background when you're making images for use in design or presentations.
