ChatGPT is where most people start with AI, and for good reason. You type a question, you get an answer. But in 2026, it's become much more than a chatbot. It's a full platform with image generation, coding tools, voice conversations, research agent and over 3 million specialized GPTs built by other users.

What you're actually paying for

The free version gives you GPT-5.5 Instant with limits (10 messages per 5 hours), and after that a less capable model (Mini). Ads are shown on Free and Go in the US, but not elsewhere yet. In short, the free version gives access to much of ChatGPT's functionality, but in very limited amounts. One useful thing the free version lacks is connecting ChatGPT to external tools.

What ChatGPT does better than others

Voice conversation is noticeably better than Claude and Gemini. It feels like talking to a person, not a machine. Memory that learns your preferences over time makes ChatGPT more useful the longer you use it. No other platform combines search, images, code, voice, research and agents in one app the same way.

With the latest model, GPT-5.5, launched in late April, ChatGPT has taken a major step forward and now feels more concise and better at following instructions.

What others do better

Claude follows instructions more precisely, especially on long and detailed tasks. ChatGPT tends to simplify or overlook specific requirements, and is known for agreeing with you rather than pushing back. Gemini is stronger on multimodal analysis. Market share has dropped from 87% to 65% in the past year. People find that specialists are better at individual tasks.

Who is it for?

It’s not easy to recommend what to choose between ChatGPT and Claude; a lot comes down to personal preference. ChatGPT has a somewhat richer selection of standard connections to other systems than Claude, while Claude has built up a large portfolio of tools beyond just chat, such as Design, Cowork, and so on. For more “advanced” knowledge work, you may get a little further with Claude today, but ChatGPT has been catching up recently. Choose Gemini if you want deep Google integration.
