Claude for Excel
Anthropic
Claude for Excel is an add-in that lets you talk to your spreadsheet in plain language. You write what you want to do, and Claude reads, understands and changes the spreadsheet for you.
What can you use it for?
The most useful part is asking questions about your data without knowing the formulas. Write "what is the average revenue per region" and Claude builds the formula. Ask for a chart, and Claude makes it. Claude can also explain complex formulas with cell references, so you actually understand what is going on in the sheet.
If your spreadsheet has errors, Claude can find and fix #REF!, #VALUE! and circular references. It shows you what was wrong and what it changed.
Claude handles workbooks with several tabs and formula dependencies without breaking anything. Every change is clearly marked.
Claude can also build complete, usable workbooks for you from a plain-language description. You can ask for a forecast for next year where you give it input on accounts, accrual periods, assumptions and so on, and Claude puts together the whole package so you get going quickly.
Connectors
Claude for Excel supports MCP connectors, which means it can pull data from external tools you already use. Finance people can connect to S&P Global or other sources without leaving Excel. Connectors you have set up in your Claude settings work automatically in Excel.
Shared context with PowerPoint
You can analyze data in Excel and go straight to PowerPoint to build a presentation. Claude remembers the analysis, and Claude in PowerPoint and Excel can "talk" to each other, so you don't have to explain the data again.
Skills and custom instructions
Skills let you save reusable workflows. You can build a fixed monthly business review report as a Skill that the team runs with one click, and get the same output every time.
You can also set custom instructions that apply in every conversation, for example "always use blue for input cells and black for formulas". Useful if you want consistent formatting.
Things to keep in mind
Be careful with spreadsheets from sources you don't know. Downloaded templates, vendor files and shared documents can contain hidden instructions that try to manipulate Claude into doing things you didn't ask for. Only use the add-in with spreadsheets you trust.
In general the Excel plugin works surprisingly well, and it is a real help for getting tasks done or building working formulas, so you don't have to google your way to how a compound formula should be written.
Copilot or Claude?
Copilot in Excel has deeper integration with Microsoft 365 and works well for everyday use. Claude is stronger on complex analysis with many dependencies and tabs, but both can do much of the same today.
How to use it
Install the add-in from the Microsoft Marketplace. Claude appears as a side panel in Excel. Write instructions in plain language, for example "analyze the sales figures in column C and find the Q4 trend." Claude reads the spreadsheet, generates formulas or charts, and explains what it is doing.
Features
Plain language
Ask questions about your data and get formulas, charts and insight without writing the formulas yourself.

Error fixing
Finds and fixes #REF!, #VALUE!, circular references and other errors. Shows what was wrong and what it changed.
Connectors
Pull data from external tools like S&P Global, LSEG or Daloopa without leaving Excel.
Shared context with PowerPoint
Analyze data in Excel and build the presentation in PowerPoint without explaining the data again.
Skills
Save and share reusable workflows with your team.
Custom instructions
Set formatting rules and preferences that apply in every conversation, for example color conventions for inputs and formulas.

Using Claude, but not for what matters most?
We help your team use it on the tasks that matter in their work.
Tips for good use
- Format the data as a table (Ctrl+T) before you start. Structured data gives better results.
- Use custom instructions for the formatting rules your team follows, like colors for input cells and formulas. Saves you repeating it in every conversation.
- Have connectors set up in your Claude settings? They work automatically in Excel. Useful for pulling in financial data without switching tools.
- Ask Claude to explain complex formulas instead of trying to read them yourself. Claude refers to specific cells, so it is easy to follow.
- Don't use the add-in with spreadsheets from unknown sources. Downloaded templates and vendor files can contain hidden instructions that try to manipulate Claude.
- Save recurring analyses as Skills. A monthly report with a fixed format is something the team can run with one click.
- Turn on session logging in settings to get an overview and an explanation of every change Claude makes.
