Copilot Cowork

Microsoft

Copilot Cowork is Microsoft's attempt at making Copilot more useful when you actually want work done, not just an answer in chat. It's a preview feature in Microsoft 365 Copilot for tasks that run over several steps, like meeting prep, email follow-ups, document work and coordination.

What's different

Regular Copilot is most useful for questions, summaries and first drafts. Cowork is built for tasks where you want to hand off more of the actual execution. Microsoft describes it as being able to pull context from Microsoft 365, draw up a plan, draft documents, prepare emails, suggest calendar changes and ask for approval before important actions are carried out.

If your working day already happens in Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive and SharePoint, it's easy to see the point. This is mainly for people who spend a lot of time pulling threads together, prepping for meetings and producing first versions of things that will later be reviewed by a human.

The relationship to Claude Cowork

Copilot Cowork isn't Claude Cowork, but Microsoft says they've worked closely with Anthropic and brought the technology that powers Claude Cowork into Microsoft 365 Copilot. That means the tools are very similar, but you should still describe the product as Microsoft's own feature in Microsoft 365, not as a separate Anthropic tool.

Copilot Cowork runs on Anthropic's Claude models, not the OpenAI models that are the default for other Copilot products. When the Anthropic models are used, the data is processed in the US, which is neither unusual nor illegal, but for larger organisations it can be a longer path to get this approved, particularly for sensitive data.

What you get, and what you don't

The upside is pretty simple: Copilot Cowork can be useful for teams already living in Microsoft 365 who want to hand off more of the boring office work. It's also a plus that it shows progress and asks for approval before the more important actions.

The limitation is that this is still early. Cowork is a Frontier preview, not a mature default product, and features can change. The value also depends a lot on how tidy your Microsoft 365 environment actually is. If files, emails and shared spaces are messy, the results get weaker quickly.

Who it's for

It fits knowledge workers, project managers, consultants and small teams already working closely in Microsoft 365. If you just need a chatbot for questions and text drafts, regular Copilot gets you a long way. If you want a more open agent experience across local files and other apps, there are alternatives that may fit better.

How to use it

  1. Check first that your organisation actually has a Microsoft 365 Copilot licence and access to the Frontier programme.
  2. Start with tasks that already live in Outlook, Teams, Word or OneDrive.
  3. Describe the goal clearly, not every single micro-step.
  4. Ask Cowork to pull context first, then draft suggestions, then act after approval.
  5. Begin with low-risk tasks like meeting prep, status notes and email drafts before using it more broadly.

Tips for good use

  • Use Cowork on tasks that actually span several Microsoft tools. If you only need a single answer, regular Copilot Chat is usually enough.
  • Ask it to show the plan or approach first. It's easier to catch mistakes before it spends time on the wrong task.
  • It gets better when your files, meetings and emails are actually tidy. Mess in Microsoft 365 gives you messy results.
  • Start with tasks where you can do a human review, like meeting prep and summaries, before you use it for anything more sensitive.
  • Don't sell this internally as a finished, mature default feature. It's still early and expectations should match that.
