Copilot in Teams

Microsoft

Copilot in Teams is an AI assistant that helps you keep track of meetings, conversations and other content in Teams. It is useful when you need to find agreed tasks and follow-up points, produce automatic meeting minutes, or get a quick overview of what has happened since you last looked at the Teams chats and channels that matter to you.

Who has access to Copilot in Teams?

Organisations with M365 Copilot (Premium) have access to the full functionality in Copilot in Teams.

There is also a Teams Premium licence that gives access to Copilot in Teams at a lower price, if your main need is AI in Teams rather than the full Copilot functionality across the other M365 apps.

Organisations on qualifying Microsoft 365 subscriptions without Copilot Premium or Teams Premium may also have limited access to some Copilot features in Teams. Which Copilot experience you get depends on your licence type and your organisation's settings.

What it is best at

One of the biggest strengths of Copilot in Teams is that it can give you a better meeting experience and make meetings easier to follow up. During a Teams meeting you can ask Copilot: "What have we agreed so far?", "What do we disagree on?" or "Which tasks have I been given?". If you join late, Copilot can give you a quick summary of what you missed.

After the meeting you can use Copilot in the meeting chat (or under the Recap tab) to find decisions, the meeting transcript if it was enabled, questions that are still unanswered, and things that need following up. That saves you watching the whole recording. It works best when the meeting was transcribed. Norwegian speech is supported.

Copilot is also useful in long Teams chats and channel threads. You can ask it to summarise what has happened since yesterday, which decisions were made, or what you actually need to reply to.

Limitations and things worth knowing

Copilot can misread both meetings and messages. A name can come out wrong, a decision can sound more final than it really was, and a suggestion can be read as an agreement. Treat the Copilot summary as a starting point that needs checking, not as finished, approved minutes.

After the meeting, Copilot also depends on Teams having enough to work with. If the meeting was not transcribed, it has far less to go on when you ask later what was said.

In ordinary chats, Copilot works mainly from the text of the conversation. It does not necessarily pick up everything in images, Loop components or attachments, so sometimes you have to open the content yourself.

Copilot in Teams meetings also works less well in meetings hosted by another organisation.

Who is it for?

Copilot in Teams works well for project managers, consultants, managers and anyone else who sits in a lot of Teams meetings or constantly has to keep up with activity across many different teams and channels.

How to use it

Look for the Copilot icon at the top of a chat, in a channel, or in the toolbar when you are in a meeting, and click it to open.

Then just write what you want to know in your own words, for example "summarise this thread" or "what was decided in this meeting?"

Features

Copilot chat in the meeting

Copilot follows the meeting and can answer questions from participants about what has been discussed.

Live captions and real time translation

If the meeting is in a language you are not comfortable with, Teams can translate it into the language you prefer as it happens, using live captions.

Intelligent Recap

After the meeting, Copilot automatically produces a summary of what was said, who was mentioned and which tasks were agreed. You find it in the recap tab as soon as the meeting ends.

Meeting transcription

Teams writes down everything said in the meeting, word for word, while it is running. Useful if you want to find something specific again, and it gives Copilot more to work with when helping with follow-up afterwards.

Search and summarise across conversations and channels

Instead of looking manually, ask Copilot to find relevant information or answer specific questions based on the chats and channels you have access to.

AI Facilitator in Teams

An AI agent that can help during the meeting, for example by keeping track of the agenda, noting decisions and suggesting next steps while you talk.

Tips for good use

  • Instead of searching for exact words, describe what you are looking for in plain language. Copilot finds it for you across chats and channels.
  • Ask Copilot questions while the meeting is running, such as "what have we decided so far?", and get an answer immediately.
  • Turn on transcription or recording manually in the Teams meeting to give Copilot more to work with, so it can give you more precise answers, including after the meeting.
  • Be concrete about what you ask. The clearer the question, the better the answer.
  • Tell participants and ask for their consent before you turn on meeting transcription with Copilot. It is both polite and necessary under privacy rules.
  • Double-check important information. Copilot can get things wrong, so check the sources before you pass content on or make decisions based on the answer.
