ChatGPT Chat

OpenAI

ChatGPT Chat is what you see when you open chatgpt.com. It's where you type questions, upload files, talk using voice and ask the AI to do things for you.

What's most interesting in 2025–2026

Agent Mode lets ChatGPT work on its own: it can navigate websites, fill out forms, run code and pull together results from several sources. It isn't flawless and can get stuck, but for structured tasks it works surprisingly well. You describe what you want done, and ChatGPT does it while you get on with something else. It does take a bit of trial and error to learn when Agent Mode is actually useful and when it isn't.

Advanced Voice Mode is one of ChatGPT's strongest cards. The conversation flows naturally, you can interrupt mid-sentence, and it feels more like talking to a person than a machine. Useful for brainstorming, language practice and for people who think better out loud than on paper. You can also walk and talk at the same time — most people will just assume you're on the phone.

Connectors (apps)

ChatGPT can connect to a lot of different data sources, so it works as a central hub with context from the other tools you use. Hook it up to Google Drive and use ChatGPT to navigate and summarise your documents. ChatGPT is much stronger than Claude here — Claude can only read Google Docs through its equivalent connector, while ChatGPT can read Docs, Sheets and Slides.

Custom GPTs

The GPT Store has over 3 million pre-built assistants. The best ones are useful for recurring workflows where you don't want to rewrite the same instructions every time. For personal use, Projects has partly taken over this role.

What ChatGPT Chat can't do

Instruction following is weaker than Claude, especially with complex, detailed requirements. In long conversations, early context can drop off. Agent Mode requires Plus or higher.

How to use it

Go to chatgpt.com and type your question into the text box. To upload files, click the paperclip icon. Use the Tools menu to pick Agent Mode, Deep Research, Canvas or image generation. For voice, tap the microphone icon. Give ChatGPT a role at the start of the conversation for more relevant answers.

Features

Agent Mode

Autonomous mode where ChatGPT handles multi-step tasks on its own: searches the web, runs code, navigates websites and pulls the results together.

Advanced Voice Mode

Voice-to-voice conversations with natural turn-taking and low latency. Supports several voices and works on mobile and desktop.

Web search with sources

Searches the web in real time and returns answers with citations. Useful for fresh news, facts and prices.

Custom GPTs

Build or use pre-made AI assistants with their own instructions, knowledge files and API integrations. Over 3 million available in the GPT Store.

File upload and analysis

Upload PDFs, Word, Excel, CSV and images for analysis. Supports several files at once, with limits that vary by plan.

Connections

Connect ChatGPT to Gmail, calendar, Drive, SharePoint and many other sources to give it more context (requires a paid plan).

Several AI models

Pick between GPT-5.4 for general use, GPT-5.4 Thinking for complex reasoning, and GPT-5.4 Pro for the heaviest tasks.

Deep Research

Autonomous research agent that spends time searching the web thoroughly, reads many sources and delivers structured reports with references. A very different thing from regular web search.

Memory

Remembers preferences and facts across conversations so you don't have to repeat yourself. You control what gets stored and can delete it at any time.

Tips for good use

  • Give ChatGPT a role at the start of the conversation, for example 'You are an experienced project manager'. You'll get more relevant, focused answers.
  • Upload pictures of tables or screenshots and ask for analysis instead of typing the content out by hand.
  • Use Agent Mode for multi-step tasks, like researching a topic and writing a report. It works on its own while you do something else.
  • Break big tasks into steps. First ask for an outline, then ask it to fill in each point.
  • Use 'Search the web' when you need up-to-date numbers, news or facts that may have changed since the training data.
  • Say 'remember that…' to save preferences that carry across conversations. Check Settings → Personalisation to see and edit what's stored.
  • Use Temporary Chat for conversations you don't want ChatGPT to learn from or remember.
  • Switch to the 'Thinking' model for better answers (requires a paid plan).
