ChatGPT Work
OpenAI
ChatGPT Work is OpenAI's agent, launched on 9 July 2026. Where ordinary chat answers you, Work takes on the task itself and keeps going until it is done — it can stay with a single project for hours by breaking it into smaller steps.
What it actually does
You give it a goal, not an instruction. Work pulls context from your apps and files, goes online to fill the gaps, and delivers an actual artefact: a spreadsheet, a presentation, a report, a simple web app. You bring in a source by typing @ followed by the service name — Slack, Gmail, Google Drive, SharePoint, Teams, Salesforce and a number of others.
Scheduled tasks
Work can run once, repeat on a fixed schedule, or monitor something over time. Summarise the week's Slack threads every Friday, check a dashboard each morning, flag it when customer feedback shifts. On Enterprise and Edu, scheduled tasks can be shared with the rest of the workspace.
The desktop app does more
In the desktop app, Work can reach local files and applications, with permission you grant per task. It has a built-in browser for fresh web context, and a Computer Use capability where it clicks, types and moves files on your machine.
Limitations
The agent is slow. A task that would have taken you twenty minutes often takes it just as long or longer, and you have to check the output either way. Early testing shows it misreading what you are after, or finishing only part of a workflow and stalling until you step in.
Usage is metered against your plan allowance with no published rate card. Long tasks consume more than short ones, and you find the ceiling by hitting it. To edit what it produced you have to prompt it for changes, export to Office or Google, or go through a connector — there is no live co-editing.
How to use it
Pick Work in ChatGPT and ask for a finished deliverable rather than an answer. Approve the connectors you need under Settings, then pull them into the task by typing @ and the service name. Describe the goal, what should be delivered and in what format, and attach a template or an earlier document if you have one. Watch it while it works — you can interrupt and correct mid-run, which is cheaper than letting it finish the wrong thing. For recurring routines, set up a scheduled task with a time and the sources it should look at.
Features
Finished deliverables
Produces spreadsheets, presentations, documents, reports and simple web apps, not just text in the chat.
Connectors
Connects to Slack, Gmail, Google Drive, SharePoint, Teams, Salesforce and more. Pull in a source by typing @ and the service name.
Scheduled tasks
Run a task once, repeat it on a fixed schedule, or have it monitor something and alert you when it changes.
Long runs
Breaks a complex project into steps and works through them over hours without you having to follow along.
Computer Use in the desktop app
With permission you grant per task, it can click, type and move files locally on your machine, and use a built-in browser.
Built on GPT-5.6
Runs on the GPT-5.6 family, OpenAI's newest models as of August 2026.

Tips for good use
- Ask for the deliverable, not the answer. "Build a spreadsheet of revenue per customer for last quarter" beats "find out how our customers are doing".
- Approve only the connectors the task actually needs. Work reads everything it has access to, and fewer sources give sharper results.
- Attach a template or an earlier document as an example. It hits the format far more reliably when it has a structure to copy.
- Check the work as it runs instead of waiting for the end. If it stalls early, the rest of the run is wasted allowance.
- Start with short tasks until you know how much allowance they consume. There is no rate card, and one long run can drain your week.
- Use scheduled tasks for the repetitive work — weekly summaries, dashboard monitoring — not for one-off analysis you need to read closely anyway.
