Claude Code
Anthropic
The name is misleading. Claude Code sounds like a tool for developers, and it is, but more and more people use it for work that has nothing to do with coding.
Claude Code is an AI agent that runs in your terminal with direct access to the files, folders and programs on your machine. That lets it do things ordinary chatbots cannot: organize hundreds of files into folders, clean up spreadsheets, build automated workflows, and work on several tasks in parallel.
For developers
This is Claude Code in its element. You describe what you want to achieve, and Claude Code navigates the project, finds the relevant files, plans the changes, implements them and runs the tests. It can change 50+ files in one operation and delegate to sub-agents working in parallel. It understands the whole codebase, not just the file you have open. That sets it apart from GitHub Copilot, for instance, which mainly gives you autocomplete.
For everyone else
Claude Code is a genuinely useful tool for knowledge workers who want to work more agentically. People use it as a personal assistant, and to automate marketing, recruitment, data analysis, report generation and content production. You can build a complete marketing system in a few hours that analyzes writing style, generates content and schedules publishing. The fact that Claude Code works directly on your machine while also integrating with tools like Notion, Slack, Gmail and Drive makes it a different animal from chatting with AI the old way.
You don't need to know how to program. You need to be able to describe what you want done. "Go through all the PDFs in this folder, pull out the key numbers, and put a summary in a spreadsheet" works perfectly well.
Costs
You pay for Claude Code either through a subscription or through the API:
- Included in Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise subscriptions
- API-based use costs more for the same amount of work than going through a subscription
- Actual costs vary a lot depending on how you use it
Limitations
- The terminal scares people off, though you can now run Claude Code straight from the desktop app
- Token usage can get high on large codebases
- Always review the changes. This is a tool that makes you faster, not one that replaces your judgment
How to use it
Install Claude Code through the terminal or as a VS Code extension. Navigate to your project folder and start a conversation. Describe the task at a high level. Claude Code explores the codebase itself and proposes an approach. It asks permission before changing files or running commands.
Use a CLAUDE.md file in the project to give it lasting context about architecture, conventions and rules. Always ask for the tests to be run after changes.

Features
Works directly with your files
Claude Code has access to folders, documents and programs on your machine. It can organize files, read PDFs, clean up spreadsheets, extract data and automate routine work, all without you copying and pasting content into a chat.
Whole-codebase understanding
Navigates the entire project, not just open files. Finds the relevant files itself and understands how they connect.
Multi-file refactoring
Can change many files in one operation. Ideal for large refactors, migrations and architectural changes.
Sub-agents
Can delegate subtasks to parallel agents to get through large jobs faster.
Git integration
Handles commit, branch and merge directly. Fits naturally into git-based workflows.
Integrations
Connects to Slack, Google Sheets, Notion, databases and many other tools through APIs or MCP. That lets Claude Code work across your services, not just local files.

Tips for good use
- Describe what you want to achieve, not how. "Add user registration with email verification" works better than step-by-step instructions. Let Claude Code find the approach based on your goal.
- Create a CLAUDE.md in the project root with architecture decisions, conventions and rules. Claude Code reads it automatically and follows it in every new session.
- Connect it to your services. With integrations Claude Code can read from Slack, send email, update Google Sheets, pull from Notion and much more. That turns it into a real assistant that works across your tools, not just local files.
- Start with harmless tasks to build trust. Begin with things that only read and summarize: 'give me an overview of the files here', 'what does this report say?', 'summarize these emails'. Wait until you have a feel for what it can do before you let it change or delete files.
- Combine it with git: Claude Code can commit changes, but always work on a separate branch. Then you can review the diff and roll back easily.
- For bigger jobs, ask Claude Code to plan first before you ask it to implement. You get better control and lower total token usage.
